Wantagh defeated MacArthur, 31-26, in a dual between two of the premier teams on Long Island, before a SRO crowd at MacArthur HS. The two teams showed how close they are in many ways- the two high schools are only 1.2 miles apart, Wantagh had seven wins to MacArthur's six victories, the Warriors posted three falls and the Generals had two, and most likely both squads will battle in February for the team title at the Nassau County Championships. The dual started at 171 pounds and Joe Kavanagh (LDivision transfer) got the Warriors off to a good start with a solid 10-5 decision, followed by a first period fall by junior Matt Loew at 189, and Thomas Hall applied an overhead cradle and secured his fall at the 5:30 mark, to give Wantagh a 15-0 lead. The Generals would battle back and win four consecutive bouts; Chris Perez scored with a low single against Joe Barbuto (Garden City transfer) and posted a 3-0 verdict at 103, county finalist Alex Grant used an overhead cradle to record a third period pin at 112, Mike Lazarus scored a major decision at 119, and all-county Sean Kempf was relentless with his cross face cradle and flattened his opponent at 5:31 in the 125-pound bout to give MacArthur a 19-15 lead. Each squad would trade victories in the next two matches, Wantagh's Nick Fitzmaurice scored with a third period switch to eke out an 8-6 win at 130 and MacArthur would answer with a solid 10-6 victory by Frank Mederios at 135. In one of the pivotal bouts in the dual, all-county Quimes Delacruz recorded a 11-4 major decision at 140, to pull his Wantagh team within one point, 22-21. Two-time state champion Paul Liguori (175-13 career) would used his double bar arm and post a solid 10-0 major decsion in the 145-pound match and gave the Warriors a 25-22 lead. Defending state champion John Greisheimer (146-14) of Wantagh, was embroiled in a wild first period scramble with MacArthur's all-county Brian Herold at 152, and emerged with a tight headlock to secure the fall at the 1:49 mark, and clinch the victory for his team.
