| Top-ranked Wantagh (7-0) defeated Suffolk power Brentwood, 41-28, in a classic dual before 956 fans at the Joe "Guv" Campo Gymnasium. The meet pitted two of the top mat squads on Long Island and featured many all-county performers.
The dual began at 113 pounds, where Eric Orellana (5-0) scored quickly with an ankle-pick takedown and then applied a series of bar arm tilts before securing the fall at the 4:50 mark. Wantagh won three consecutive bouts, including major decisions by Chris Araoz (126) and Vin Turano (132), along with a fall by Nick Vines at 138 pounds that gave the Warriors a 14-10 lead.
The host Indians responded as county bronze medalist Alexis Blanco (5-0) scored with a series of double leg takedowns and added a slick duck-under before converting a tight bar arm for a third period pin. At 160 pounds, Brentwood's tough Carlos Toribio upset previously unbeaten Dan McDevitt (11-1) with a key third period double leg takedown and emerged with a 4-2 victory. McDevitt was moved up a few weight classes to strengthen their line-up and Toribio's win gave the host team a 19-17 lead.
The Indians' Misael Romero (4-0) scored with a strong double leg takedown in overtime to edge Alex Wedell 5-3 in the 182-pound bout. Wantagh's Chris Loew used his tight bar arm for a first period fall at 195 and teammate Steven English (285) applied a half nelson to gain a pin with five seconds remaining in his bout. Freshman Jose Rodriquez (7-0), one of the top 99-pounders in the state, was a buzz saw and posted a first period pin to give Wantagh an insurmountable 38-28 lead. Highly-regarded Kyle Quinn, also a freshman, blanked his opponent, 7-0, in the 106-pound class.
Brentwood head coach Ralph Napolitano is now in his 10th year at the helm at Brentwood. The Indians are the #1 mat squad in Suffolk County. Wantagh featured the return of legendary coaches Paul Gillespie and lifelong friend Reggie Jones, Jr. That tandem coached together at Long Beach HS for 18 years and during that tenure won 17 dual and county team titles. In 1982 and 1987 the LB Marines were the number-one team in New York State...
