| John Glenn held a commanding lead after the semifinal round at the Suffolk County Championships.The Knights advanced Nick Meinsen (27-0) at 130 and Nick Terdick (28-0) at 152. Meinsen recorded a 7-5 decision and Terdick used a slick ankle pick takedown, and later secured his bar arm for a fall in 5:02. Hauppauge was in second and pushed three into the finals, Mark West (38-0) at 96, Kevin Panebianco (37-3) at 135 and Jesse Marro (39-4) at 145. West will face unbeaten Conor O'Hara (35-0) of Sachem East in the final. Panebianco scored with a double leg takedown with eight seconds remaining in his semi-final match against Glenn's Matt Gannon and held on for a thrilling 8-7 win. Marro needed overtime to edge Matt Fusaro (JG) 4-2, and will face defending state champion Andy Rodriguez (30-0) of Central Islip in the championship bout.
The Soria brothers, Mike (33-0) & Max (33-2), of Kings Park, both posted solid decisions and will meet in the 103-pound final. Mike scored with an escape and a quick single leg takedown for a 3-0 win and Max used a hip toss for a 6-1 verdict. At 119, Damon McQueen (37-1)of Hintington scored with a double leg takedown to post a 5-1 decision. Unbeaten Alex Gomez (34-0) of Brentwood converted a snap/spin takedown with 15 seconds left in his bout with tough Pete DeTore and held on for an exciting 8-7 victory. Kings Park's Mike Delvecchio (26-5) was trailing top-seeded Casey Brice (Longwood), 5-1. when he threw a hip toss and stunned Brice at the 4:52 mark in their 125- pound bout. In the other 125-pound semi-final, Sachem North's Ryan Gerondel (41-2) scored with a double leg takedown and edged Dan Tracey (Ward Melville), 7-5 overtime.
Rocky Point currently in fourth place in the team standings, advanced their trio of All-State performers. Reigning state king, Stephen Dutton (43-0) at 140, Anthony Volpe (39-1) at 160 and Billy Coggins (41-1) at 171 pounds. Dutton had an 18-3 tech fall, Volpe a second period pin and Coggins a close 6-5 decision. Huntington was in fifth place and has four finalists, including the aforementioned McQueen, a defending Suffolk champion and state finalist. Other Blue Devil contenders are unbeaten Nigel McNeil (33-0) at 112, Lou Puca (34-3) at 160 and tough Ryan Fox (37-1) at 171 pounds.
The semi-final round produced non-stop action throughout the fifteen weight classes. For the second consecutive year, both Kings Park and West Bablyon have landed in the Top Ten. Kings Park's unseeded Mike Delvecchio advanced from the pigtails to the finals, and set a Suffolk County record by winning four consecutive bouts in one day. He joins the Soria brothers as finalists. West Babylon has two finalists; Paul Bauman (30-5) at 130 and unbeaten John Wilkinson (29-0) at 285 pounds. Longwood was in third place and has two finalists; Malik Rasheed (112) and Ben Lee (285), both are returning all-county performers. Other top-seeded wrestlers that advanced to the championship bouts were Sachem East's Chris DiIorio (41-1) at 189 and Steve Provenzano (34-4) of Islip at 215. West Babylon's top-rated Jordan Colon was upset by Mt.Sinai's Eric Kogel (30-2), 7-1, at 135 pounds. In the 152-pound finals, state finalist Nick Terdick (28-0) is pitted against Islip's Kyle Wade (33-0). Wade edged Patrick Jennings (Longwood), 3-2 overtime. The Leshingers brothers: Matt (96) and Steven (140) of Sayville, will both wrestled for bronze medals. Other sets of brothers earning all-county status are the Rasheed's, Corey (103) and Malik (112), the Dutton's,Tommy, a 7th-grader at 103 and older brother Stephen, along with the McCabe's Sean (112) and James (119) of Connetquot.
