| East Islip won the 67th annual Suffolk County Wrestling Championships, crowned two champions and amassed 179.5 points and outdistanced defending champion, Islip who finished with 146.5, followed by Sachem East (125.5), Brentwood (105.5) and Hauppauge with 79.5 points. The Redmen were paced by Jake Benedetto (31-2) at 96 and state placewinner Dave Ingram (36-0, 152-27) at 135 pounds. The Bucs had four champions, including defending state champion, Ryan Patrovich (36-0, 201-12), at 160, two-time titlist Tyler Mashkow (34-3)at 112, Paul Vaeth (35-1) at 140 and Lance Wade (32-1) at 152. Sachem's East Matt Ferber (35-0, 29 pins), a 2005 state finalist, dominated his weight class as he posted four falls en route to the 215-pound crown, he received the Most Pins Award. Three other champions successfully defended their titles, Commack's Mike Piccirillo (140-16) won the loaded 119-pound class and was voted the tournament's outstanding wrestler award, SWading River's Corey Jantzen (36-0, 128-7) at 125 and Sachem North's Chris Iorio (30-2, 125-16) at 130 pounds. Iorio avenged an earlier loss to Dom Belvedere (WM), as he scored with two powerful single leg takedowns to post a solid, 6-2 decision in the finals. In quarterfinal action, defending state king, John Oschmann (Hauppauge) was upset by returning Suffolk champion, Mike Piccirillo (Commack), 9-7 overtime in the loaded 119-pound class. In the lower half bracket, Nikken Fauntleroy (Copiague) dropped a 5-3 decision to Whitman's Rob Troy. Oschmann met Fauntleroy for the bronze medal and was leading, 2-1, when Fauntleroy suffered a severe ankle and leg injury and had to default the bout. Top-seeded Dillon Yanson (18-1) of Northport won the 275-pound title. |
