SUFFOLK COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT UPDATE
      LONGWOOD LEADS SUFFOLK COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS

     Longwood has an insurmountable lead at the Suffolk County Wrestling Championships @ Stony Brook University. The Lions amassed 161 points to lead defending team champion John Glenn (98), Connetquot (89.5), Sachem East and Huntington, both with 81.5.

     The
Longwood pushed six wrestlers into the semifinals and were led by state place-winners Corey and Malik Rasheed. Corey (33-1) at 112 and Malik (30-4) at 130. The Lions had four 2010 All-County matmen also advanced: Anthony D'onofrio (96), Casey Brice (130), Nicky Hall (29-2) at 145 and top-seeded Pat Jennings (30-2) at 160 pounds.

   
John Glenn was paced by top-rated James Dekrone (38-1) at 130, Ken Meinsen (27-3) at 135, Kevin Massa (23-1) at 160 and county bronze medalist Joe Giaramita (29-3, 114-23) at 189. Unseeded Nick Bellanza upset second-seeded Rich Lugo (DP), 9-7, at 160 pounds.

    
Connetquot had a nice first day at the county meet and are led by Sean McCabe (130-9 career) at 112, Stephen Drew (125) and Nick Lobue (160). Both Drew and LoBue earned all-county honors at the 2010 championships.

     In the
Division II Tournament defending team champion Bayport-Blue Point tallied 188 points to lead Center Moriches (117) and Mattituck (110.5). The Phantoms were led by reigning champions Ryan Hake (23-5) at 125, Kyle Underwood (32-1) at 130, Jeff Purdy (29-4) at 130 and top-seeded Brandin Thomas (31-2) at 140 pounds. Other standouts were Jim Alles (215) and Harrison DeSousa (285), all posted first period pins.

Defending state champions Mark West (41-4) of Hauppauge at 112 and Nigel McNeil (34-0, 157-15) of Huntington at 119, advanced to the semifinal round. West shutout Mark Sanchez (CI), 6-0, and McNeil scored with a double leg takedown and bar arm tilts to defeat Vin Punzone (28-4) of John Glenn, with an 11-2 major decision. State finalists Kyle Wade (37-0) of Islip at 152 and Lou Puca (32-0) of Huntington at 171 rolled through their brackets as both posted two solid victories. Five-time sectional place-winner and state medalist Alex Gomez (34-0, 186-12) of Brentwood posted a 10-2 major decision over Tom Venier (KP) in the 125-pound class. League V champion Chris Mauriello (34-7) of Hauppauge had an exciting overtime victory over Walt Whitman's Joe Calderone at 96 pounds. Mauriello, a 7th-grader, scored with a double leg takedown and near fall for the 6-2 win and now will face top-seeded Nick Piccininni (30-1) of Ward Melville. In the loaded 112-pound class Sayville's Matt Leshinger (36-4) defeated Suffolk finalist Conor O'Hara (29-4), of Sachem East. Leshinger scored with a front headlock and later added a key third period single leg takedown en route to a 6-2 decision. Sachem East's Frank Merante used a duck under and front trip to edge highly-regarded John Zullo (Connetquot) with 12 seconds remaining to eke out a 5-4 victory in their 171-pound quarterfinal bout. Two sets of brothers advanced to the semifinal round, the Passaro brothers of Eastport-South Manor: Travis (42-3) at 103 and Maverick (42-5) at 125, along with the Bass brothers, Conner (40-3) at 135 and Zach (40-2) at 145, their dad, Paul Bass is the head coach for the Hurricanes.Two match-ups in tomorrow semifinals that have implications for the team title are James Dekrone (JG) vs Malik Rasheed (Long) at 130 and Pat Jennings (Long) vs Kevin Massa (JG) at 160. The last time Longwood won the Suffolk team title was in 1997...
