SUFFOLK COUNTY TOURNAMENT
Islip HS is on the verge on capturing their first Suffolk County Wrestling Championship as they advanced ten wrestlers into the semifinals after the first day on competition held at Stony Brook University. Coach Joe Patrovich has the Bucs peaking as they amassed 125 points and led Hills East(68), Smithtown(62), Longwood(61.5) and defending team champion Huntington with 55.5 points. Islip is led by defending champions,Tom Magnani(31-0) who defeated Brentwood's Martin Irizarry, 11-3, at 119 pounds and Ryan Patrovich(29-2) who posted a 1:37 fall over Jonathan Joe(HillsE) in the 152-pound class. Other reigning champions that advanced were Peppy Cabrera(24-1) of Brentwood at 103, defending state king Alton Lucas(32-0) of West Babylon who flattened Dan McNichols(WIslip) in :59 seconds at 160, state runners-up, John Barone(31-1) of Wm. Floyd at 171 and Huntington's Jack Sullivan(20-2) at 189 pounds. Defending champion and top-seeded, Ken Kennedy(20-2) of Sachem North fell to Islip's Christian Wintons, 4-2, at 275 pounds. Former Suffolk titlists; Chris Lahn(125) of Lindenhurst and Riverhead's Matt Scott(31-0) at 130 pounds, also advanced to the semifinal round, which is scheduled to start at 12:00 noon on Monday. |
