By Jim & Tony Nordland

The 8th annual Oklahoma Gold Camps came back to Smithtown HS and attracted over 50 schoolboy grapplers that attended the week long camp. The wrestling camp featured Oklahoma head coach Jack Spates ( a 1970 NYS champion from Smithtown and  a NCAA runner-up while at Slippery Rock (PA). Spates has been at Oklahoma University for the past 13 seasons and was recently named Coach-of-the-Year. Spates, along with his sons; Jeremy, an assistant coach at Oklahoma and Justin, provided excellent instruction for the attentive group of young wrestlers. Jeremy (a former Oklahoma state
champion), was an All-American while attending Missouri, as he finished 5th at the NCAA meet and younger brother Justin, is a former two-time PA state champion. The two sons, along with their father, are outstanding clinicians and stressed basic fundamentals and skills in their two-a-day sessions. Spates teaches them moves that they will all be able to incorporate into their repertoires next season and at the same time, gives them a basic foundation. Also, assisting at he the Gold Camp, were Smithtown high school coaches; Dave Cummings (East), Ken Leverich (West), along with middle school coach, Brian Betencourt.
