Long Island's top ranked team, Islip HS, was impressive as they crowned four champions, including defending state champion, Ryan Patrovich (21-0), as he cruised to the 171 pound title at the Sachem Invitational Tournament. The invitational featured ten teams, many of which are considered to be amongst the top squads in Suffolk. Many wrestling observers felt that the finals were a preview of the county tournament, especially in the 119-pound class. Reigning 96-pound state king, John Oschmann (Haup) was defeated by Nick Cuccinello (22-0) of SWest,10-6, in an exciting bout that saw Cuccinello score on a third period reversal and a near fall for the victory, he was voted the tournament's outstanding wrestler. His twin brother, Tom (22-2), won at 125. In another marquee match of the finals, two county champions squared off in the 130-pound bout and SWRiver's Corey Jantzen (22-0) prevailed with a third period takedown for 3-1 decision over Chris Iorio (SachN) and was voted the Champion of Champions Award. State finalist Matt Ferber (20-0) of SachEast dominated his opponents en route to the 215-pound crown and his teammates, John Perez (135) and unbeaten Frank Sciacca (19-0) at 189, also won their respective weight classes. Hauppauge eighth-grader Steven Dutton (20-1,16 pins) won the 112-pound class and recorded a first period fall in the finals... |
