Nassau CC, a perennial NJCAA power defeated The United States Merchant Marine Academy, 27-6, before 548 fans on Alumni Night at Nassau Community College. The Lions were paced by top-ranked Ricardo Gomez (10-4) who opened the scoring with a reshot single leg takedown and added a key third period reversal to post a 10-6 decision at 133 pounds. Sophomore Mike Doria (Massapequa) followed with a solid performance at 141. Doria scored with a slick single leg trip takedown and used his patented headlock en route to an 8-1 verdict, and gave the host team a 9-0 lead. In perhaps the most entertaining bout of the evening, Nassau's Kodie Silvestri (13-3) used a barrage of first period takedowns, including a quick shrug to open a 6-2 margin. The Mariner's Martin Bell (Michigan) rallied with a headlock and a third period cradle on the buzzer to knot the match at 10-10, but Silvestri had accumulated a riding time point and eked out a 11-10 victory in the 149-pound bout.
At 165 pounds, the USMMA's Dan Twito (Iowa) recorded an 8-2 decision and brought the team score to 15-3. Nassau responded and claimed three of the next four matches as Chris Gandolfi (8-4) secured a tight cross-face cradle and posted a solid 6-1 decision at 174, David Khovin was a 9-4 winner at 197 and Corey James applied a bar-arm and registered a third period fall in his 285-pound bout.
Many alumni were in attendance tonight include former Nassau CC coach and Hall-of-Fame inductee Chuck Henke, along with Jim McCormack and two-time NJCAA All-American Neil Nugent. Nassau CC has six grapplers ranked amongst the elite in the nation by Amateur Wrestling News. Gomez (Brentwood) was a national finalist last season and is rated number one at 125 pounds, Silvestri (6th at 141), Rob Troy (10th at 149), Gandolfi (8th at 174), Jesus Cartagena (11th at 184) and James (9th at 285). James who hails from upstate Kingston was a NYS runner-up last season. Head coach Paul Schmidt and able assistants, Chris Edmond and Tyshaun Scarlett boast a strong squad and should be one of the top teams at the NJCAA Championships in late February.
