Long Beach is on the verge of capturing the team title and has two finalists in the 96-pound weight class. Top-seeded Mark Raghunandan (27-6) will face Krishna Sewkumar (28-6), not only are they teammates, but they are first cousins. The Marines' Edisson Tigre-Borja (30-12) upset Vin Androtti (37-4) of Farmingdale in the semi-finals by hitting two granby roll reversals for a solid 13-6 decision at 130. Returning county titlist sophomore Dylan Palacio (39-2) scored a 13-0 major decision at 140. Defending team champion Wantagh advanced their three returning champions Nick Fitzmaurice (24-8) at 152, Joe Kavanagh (33-1) at 171, and state finalist Matt Loew (38-1). Loew used his patented bar-arm to flatten his opponent at the 3:41 mark of their 189-pound bout and now has 85 career pins. The Warriors' NYS placer Joe Barbato (34-3) at 103, was a wild card entrant at the 2009 state meet, and will seek the county title this evening.
Reigning two-time state king Nick Arujau (35-0, 180-7) of Syosset needed only 23 seconds in his semifinal bout at 125. Arujau scored with a quick single leg takedown and then applied his standing tilt to secure the first period fall. Arujau has won 119 consecutive matches, three shy of the Nassau record held by Wantagh's two-time state champion Paul Liguori (now at Harvard). Three other defending Nassau champions advanced to gold medal matches, Will Montgomery (32-3) of Seaford at 112, Garden City's Connor Horl (28-2) at 215 and David Agu (26-1) of Freeport at 285 pounds. Montgomery had a 10-3 win and Horl was awarded a stalling point with two seconds remaining in regulation against Syosset's Steven Graziano, to knot the match at 3-3. In the overtime stanza, Horl escaped with a stand up and eked out a 4-3 victory. Agu has recorded three falls en route to the county final. Only two other finalists kept their records unscathed; Joe Chamish (41-0) of Jericho at 160 and Plainedge's David Ng (43-0) at 215 pounds.
The Division I championship bouts are scheduled for 7:30 PM...
