| MACARTHUR WINS 7th COUNTY TITLE

MacArthur HS won the Nassau County Wrestling Championships as they amassed 224 points to outdistanced runner-up Wantagh (168) at the David S. Mack Sport Complex at Hofstra University. The Generals crowned one champion, Anthony Daly (31-3) at 189 pounds amongst their three finalists and tallied ten place-winners. Head coach Howie Greenblatt has now won seven county titles and stated, "The seniors remembered what won the many championships here and followed the plan of the program." He added, "This was a very special group of kids and they respected the tradition that was set before them." Wantagh is trying to build that traditon and garnered three county crowns, including two-time state champion, Paul Liguori (36-0) at 125 and John Greisheimer (45-1, 137-14) at 145, both are juniors. The Warriors also claimed the OSW Award with senior Steven Bonanno (39-0, 131 career wins) at 119 pounds. Rounding out the top teams were Plainedge (140.5), Seaford (131.5), Baldwin (111), Massapequa (96.5) and Garden City with 95 points. Plainedge had two individual winners, Rocky Cervini (40-1, 165-30) at 140 and John Makastchian (38-3, 100-26) who claimed the 171-pound crown. Baldwin, Massapequa and Garden City also crowned two champions. Claiming titles for Baldwin were junior Vin Pecora (39-1, 93-12) at 103 and returning champion Kerron Williams (35-1, 152-13) who scored with a strong double in overtime to edge freshman Joe Kavanaugh (LDivision), 8-6, and take the 152-pound championship. The Chiefs' Mike Doria (25-3, 107-35) at 130, and Shane Strumwasser (41-1) at 135, both successfully defended their titles and hope to capture state gold medals in two weeks at Rochester. Garden City eighth-grader Mike Lofrese (22-9) won five bouts en route to the 96-pound title and senior Spencer DeSena (37-0, 112-22) registered the only fall in the finals and cruised to his county crown in the 215-pound class. Syosset sophomore Nick Arujau (40-0, 99-13), a returning state finalist, dominated all his opponents and scored a technical fall in the finals to capture the 112-pound championship. Other county winners were Jordan Spirou (43-3, 137-25) of Clarke at 160 and Calhoun's Bobby Tobia (38-1, 93-31) who scored with a strong double leg takedown and near fall to outlast Valley Stream Central's Jeff St. Simon, 7-5, to win the 285-pound title.

CHAMPION of CHAMPIONS- Shane Strumwasser (Massapequa-135)
Both Paul Liguori (36-0, 166-12 career mark) of Wantagh and Shane Strumwasser (41-1, 161-32) of Massapequa won their third county titles. Liguori, a junior, is now seeking his third NYS crown and has a 118-match win streak, his last loss was in the county finals as an eighth-grader. MacArthur HS under the tutelage of head coach Howie Greenblatt have dominated the county tournament in this decade and have won county titles in 2001-2006, and this year. The last time Wantagh won the county team title was in 1968. Plainedge's John Makastchian won the 171-pound title and earned his 100th career victory. Four Nassau champions remained unbeaten on the season, sophomore Nick Arujau (40-0) of Syosset, Steven Bonanno (39-0) of Wantagh, the aforementioned Liguori and Spencer DeSena (37-0) of Garden City.
