NASSAU COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS

    East Meadow holds a commanding lead at the Nassau County Championships, as they tallied 159 points to Plainedge's 135 and Long Beach has 115, after the completion of the semi-final round. The Jets advanced four into the finals, Jimmy Pannullo (30-5) at 96, Tom Rispoli (35-3) at 135, returning county finalist Sal Hanna (34-7, 108-33 career)  and Phil Thomas (21-4) at 171 pounds. Hanna was embroiled in a wild semi-final battle, as he defeated Farmingdale's Greg Sands, 22-10. He will face defending state champion Eduardo Delgado (35-0, 174-32) in the 152-pound title bout,  Delgado scored a 14-0 major decision over Dan Germann (EM). Plainedge pushed three into the finals, Matt Rich (37-1) at 103, Rocco Cervini (39-1, 32 pins) at 135 and Evan O'Brien (29-6) at 145 pounds. Both Rich and Cervini were finalists last year and are hoping to claim their first county crowns. The Red Devils' John Makastchian suffered a heartbreaking defeat at the hands of unseeded Jim Isnardi of Bethpage. Isnardi took Makastchian down and used an overhead cradle to eke out a 17-15 decision at 160 pounds. Long Beach emerged with four finalists, the aforementioned Delgado, Dane Davis (130), three-time Nassau champion PJ Gillespie (36-0, 209-29) at 145 and Tim McCormack at 275 pounds. Gillespie was impressive as used a barrage of takedowns and tilts for an 18-3 tech fall in 5:53 over tough Blake Fisher of Seaford. Defending state champion, Paul Ligouri (42-0, 130-12) of Wantagh posted a tech fall at the 4:00 mark over Mepham's Tom Vultaggio, as he applied his bar-arm turns throughout the match. Two defending county champions also advanced to the championship finals, junior Shane Strumwasser (24-1, 114-29) of Massapequa at 125, and  state runner-up Maciej Jochym (39-0, 131-10) of Herricks at 215 pounds.

PJ Gillespie with his 209 career victories in the winningest wrestler in Nassau County history. He has finished third in the past three state tournaments and will be seeking his fourth county title in the finals. His teammate, Dane Davis advanced to the finals on a controversial takedown, for a 4-3 verdict, over Garden City's Dave Foxen at 130 pounds. He will face top-seeded junior Mike Doria (28-3, 75-24) of Massapequa in the title bout. Calhoun senior Mike Pagano (21-0, 133-26) had to overcome a knee injury midway through the season and advanced to the 140-pound final. Unseeded, Jim Isnardi (27-14) of Bethpage upset the #1 seed, Jordan Spirou (Clarke), 5-2, in the quarterfinals and advanced to the final after defeating fifth-seeded, the aforementioned Makastchian in the semi-finals. He will face second-seeded Henoc Maurice (41-1, 100 wins) of Uniondale in the 160-pound finals.
