NASSAU COUNTY DUAL MEET CHAMPIONSHIPS

     MacArthur (21-4) defeated Massapequa (12-1), 36-15, to capture the Section Eight Dual Meet Championship, before 950 fans at Tresper Clarke HS. The Generals won their sixth consecutive dual meet title, and in two weeks, will be seeking their sixth straight Nassau County crown. Coach Howie Greenblatt, now in his 20th season, had his squad ready, as the Generals won nine of the thirteen bouts contested and were led by county champions, 2004 winner, Steve DeLorenzo (29-1) at 140 and Dan Calvacca (24-2) at 152 pounds. DeLorenzo posted a second period pin and Calvacca registered a 4-1 decision over Andrew Mundo (26-6) to give his team an insurmountable, 33-12 lead, with only two bouts remaining in the dual. The championship meet started at 189 pounds and MacArthur's Brian Meredith (21-9) scored a stunning fall at the 2:18 mark over Brendan Feifer. The Chiefs responded by winning three of the next four bouts; Dan Bittner (26-4) at 215, Pat Weinschreider, who used his bar-arm stack to secure a :57 second fall at 103 and sophomore Shane Strumwasser (25-1) at 119 pounds. Strumwasser, a 2004 county runner-up decisioned state finalist Mike Daly (18-6), 5-1, to give his team a short-lived, 12-11 lead. But the Generals responded with taking the next seven bouts, icluding an overtime win at 125 pounds. In that pivotal match, MacArthur's Dom Tarallo (23-8) edged the Chiefs' Mike Doria (17-5), 1-1, overtime criteria. Both wrestlers exchanged escapes during regulation and in the overtime stanza, neither wrestler could secure a takedown. In the second overtime period,Tarallo rode Doria for the 30 seconds to eke out the victory. Other standouts for the Generals were; Greg Popko (23-6) who was relentless with his fireman's takedowns at 112, Nick Monaco (19-6) who edged Zach Spero (21-8), 4-1, at 135 and Paul Denega at 145 pounds. Massapqua's Alex Varon (29-2) posted a solid 8-5 decsion over Scott O'Donnell at 171 pounds in the last bout of the dual.

In the 2005 final, MacArthur defeated Massaequa and the Chiefs' Mike Doria edged Dom Tarallo, 4-3, for their only victory...The last team to win the Nassau dual-meet title was East Meadow in 2000, when they upset Long Beach, 39-15. The Jets coach,Tom Reynolds, lost close duals to Massapequa (28-27) for the conference title and to MacArthur, (24-20). In that semi-final dual, a thrilling bout occurred at 152 pounds, and saw county runner-up Sal Hanna decisioned reigning Nassau champ, Dan Calvacca, 17-15 overtime. Many astute wrestling observers commented, "That was the best high school wrestling match I have ever seen." Both Hanna (145) and Calvacca (152) are favored to win their respective weight classes at the county meet...In the Class B championship, Island Trees (15-5-2) and Plainedge (14-2-1) battled to a 24-24 stalemate. The match came down to the exciting 103-pound bout, and the Bulldog's Matt Eberlein (25-8) edged Matt Rich, 4-2 overtime. Also, Joe Cusker (29-7) upset county champion, Paul Cervini, 4-2 double overtime, at 125. During the season, Island Trees had defeated Plainedge, 30-19. Both teams were declared co-champions...
