MAT NOTES... At the 2005 NYS Championships, Section Five (Rochester area) won their fourth sectional team title and had 14 state place winners, including cousins that won state crowns, Josh Patterson and Ryan Lamagra from Wayne HS. For the first time at the NYS Intersectionals, wild card selections will be used and will have four additional entries, thus making a full 16-man bracket in all 15 weight classes in both divisions at the 2007 state meet. Section Eleven (Suffolk County) now has 125 state champions, folllowed by Section Four (Binghamton area) with 114 individual winners and Section Eight (Nassau County) with 94 titles. Section Eleven will be seeking their unprecendented 17th sectional title and return three NYS champions along with six state medallists.Islip HS edged Valley Central HS, 83 points to 62, for individual school honors. The two-day attendance of 17,755 at the Nassau Coliseum broke the record of 17,323 set at the Pepsi Arena in 2004. Four New York prepped wrestlers are ranked amongst the best in the nation by Amateur Wrestling News, they are Ian Paddock (4th at 112), Corey Jantzen (3rd at 135), Paul Paddock (10th at 160) and Michael Chaires (3rd at 171). Five-time NYS champion Troy Nickerson, now a sophomore at Cornell University, is currently ranked second in the nation at 125 pounds.
