MAT NOTES...
Section Three (Syracuse area) won the Division II team title as they amassed 269 points and crowned three champions. Winning titles for the gold-clad Central New York area squad were Shane Roggie (52-0), of Beaver River at 135, junior Mike Kampnich (30-1) of General Brown at 145 and Jason Brown (37-1) of Cato Meridian at 215 pounds. Only four of the possible eight reigning champions were able to repeat as state titlists, including three-time state king, Eric Decker (41-2, 215-16) of Bainbridge GAfton-4, who edged state champion, Paul Paddock (44-2) of Warsaw-5, 3-1, for the 160-pound title. Decker also recorded two falls and was voted the Division II outstanding wrestler award. Other defending champions were Josh Denesha (36-2) of Gouverneur-10 at 140, Colin McDonald (46-3) of Section Four power Waverly  at 152 and Jim Almy (35-3) of Duanesburg-2 at 275 pounds. Failing to repeat were freshman Ian Paddock (45-1) who finished third at 103, Anwar Goeres (48-3) of Phoenix-3, who placed sixth at 125 and Mike Aris (39-4) of Barker-6, who batlled back for a fifth place finish at 130 pounds. State runners-up that sought redemption were Mike McInally (43-0) of Byron Bergen-5 at 119 and Nick Clark (31-0) of Canisteo-Greenwood-5 at 189, both were victorious in their respective weight classes. Two other state kings remained unscathed, the aforementiond Roggie and Brandon Lapp (39-0) of Maple Hill-2, who defeated Casey McDonald (44-6), 4-2 overtime, for the 171-pound crown. Also earning state titles were Chris Conti (38-4) of Fredonia-6 at 96, eighth-grader, Nick Wilcox (34-1) of Greene-4 at 103, Alex Ekstrom (33-3) of Palmyra-Macedon at 112, Dave Marble (29-1) of Harpursville-4 at 125 and David Perrigo (33-2) of Gouverneur-10 at 130 pounds. Marble was entered in one of the toughest weight classes in the tournament  and defeated Mt.Sinai's, Jared Rueda (33-1), 9-6, in a hotly contested bout in the finals. Amy Whitbeck, a sophomore from  Duanesburg-2, became the first female to compete in the NYS Tournament. Whitbeck was entered in the 96-pound class and finished the season with a 26-6 record, she was one match from earning all-state honors. Gouverneur-10 won the individual school title, as they scored 91 points, to finish ahead of Waverly (76), Mt. Sinai (71.5), Duanesburg (47) and Beekmantown who finished with 44 points. The combined record of the 15 Division II champions was 558 victories and 23 losses. At the 2007 state meet, there will be wild card selections for the first time in state competition and the NYS Intersectional Championships are scheduled for March 2nd-3rd, at the Pepsi Arena in Albany...
