The purple-clad contingent were paced by 14 state placewinners, along with three champions, Kyle Borshoff (44-0) of Pittsford at 130, cousins, Josh Patterson (48-0) at 171 and junior Ryan Lamagra (47-1) at 189, both hail from Wayne HS. Defending team champion, Section Eleven (Suffolk) finished as runners-up and garnered five individual titles, Islip's Tyler Mashkow (38-3, 109-14), who was relentless with his single leg takedowns at 112, and teammate, two-time titlist, Ryan Patrovich (40-0, 205-12), who used his snap-spin takedowns, along with his half nelsons to totally dominate his weight class. Patrovich recorded two tech falls and two pins en route to the 160-pound crown. Also winning state titles were Corey Jantzen (46-0) who defeated four quality opponents, including three-time bronze medallist, Long Beach junior PJ Gillespie (35-1), 5-0, in his opening bout. In the finals, he used a combination of single and double leg takedowns, along with his patented crab ride and half to defeat, Mahopac's Dave Colagiovanni (35-2), 16-5, to capture the 125-pound title. Jantzen, a junior, was voted the tournament's outstanding wrestler, a feat his older brother, Jesse, also accomplished as a high school junior and thus became the first brothers ever to both win the MOW award. Suffolk's other state winners were a pair of unbeatens, Dave Ingram (41-0, 156-17) of East Islip, who held on to defeat MacArthur's Steve Delorenzo (40-2, 136-19), 8-7, at 135 and Sachem East's Matt Ferber (38-0, 104-17), who used his strong double leg takedowns to secure his title at 215 pounds. Finishing third in the team standings was Section Eight (Nassau) who captured two state crowns, outstanding freshman, Wantagh's Paul Liquori (39-0) who overpowered his opponents with his barrell-roll takedowns for the 96-pound title and junior Eduardo Delgado (41-1) of Long Beach, who rallied and scored with a double leg takedown with two seconds remaining in the bout, for an excitng finish and the 140-pound state crown. Also successfully defending their titles were three-time state king, Lou Ruggirello (45-1, 171-9) of Valley Central, who pinned Greg Einfrank (38-1) in the first period with his bar arm and half nelson at 119 pounds. Four-time champion, JP O'Connor (39-0, 239-12) of Oxford prevailed with a solid 11-4 decision in the finals to claim the 145-pound crown. O'Connor became only the second wrestler to win four state titles, (Jesse Jantzen was the first), he won titles at 96, 119 and 130 pounds. Section Two (Albany) garnered two state crowns, Jeremy Cuomo (38-0, 181-12) of Schalmont at 103 and Michael Chaires (46-1), of CBA, who edged Islip's Lance Wade (34-2), 3-1 overtime at 152, along with unbeaten Bryant Deinhardt (32-0) of Deposit-4, at 275 pounds. Suffolk County has won the sectional team title a record 16 times and now have 125 NYS champions, followed by Section Four with 114 individual winners and Nassau with 94 titles. Lou Ruggirello and Ryan Patrovich have signed with Hofstra University and JP O'Connor will attend Harvard University. Ten of the champions finished the season undefeated and the combined record of the 15 Division I champions was an unbelievable mark of 622 victories and only 7 losses. The two-day attendance of 17, 755 broke the record of 17, 323 set last year at the Pepsi Arena. The state finals attracted 9,340 spectators and eclipsed the mark set last season of 8,242. Islip HS tallied 83 points, crowned two champions, had one runner-up, among their four state placewinners to edge Valley Central (62.5), followed by Wayne (49.5), Brockport (49) and Oxford with 45 points for individual school honors. Now there are only three states that have a single classification for their state championships, California, Indiana and New Jersey. At the 2007 state meet, there will be wild card selections for the first time in state competition and the NYS Intersectional Championships are scheduled for March 2nd-3rd, at the Pepsi Arena in Albany...
