Section Five (Rochester area) leads defending team champion Section Eleven (Suffolk County), 104.5 points to 82. The purple-cladded contingent are led by cousins, Josh Patterson (47-0) at 171 and Ryan Lamagra (46-1) at 189, both hail from Wayne HS. Also from that area is Zack Ellis (36-7) at 103 and unbeaten Kyle Borshoff (44-0) at 130 pounds. He will face tough Chris Iorio (33-2) in an interesting final bout Saturday night. Former 2004 state winner,Trevor Franklin (19-2) dropped a 7-6 decision to Dave Colagiovanni (33-2) in the quarterfinals at 125 pounds. Colagiovanni then defeated state king, Austin Meys (35-2), 4-3 to advance to the championship final. His finals opponent will be junior Corey Jantzen (45-0) who stunned Kevin Smith (42-2) with a third period fall at the 4:53 mark. Jantzen was trailing 2-0, going into the third period, when he reversed Smith and clamped him in an overhead cradle, in perhaps one of the top bouts in the semifinals. Defending state champions that advanced to the finals are three-time champion, JP O'Connor (39-0) at 145 pounds, two-time winner Lou Ruggirello (45-1) at 119 and Ryan Patrovich (39-0) at 160 pounds. Patrovich led the Section Eleven team and his Islip teammates,Tyler Mashkow (37-3) at 112, along with Lance Wade (34-1) at 152, will join him in the finals. Two all Long Island finals will pit Dave Ingram (40-0) against Steve Delorenzo (40-1) at 135 and 2005 state finalist Matt Ferber (37-0, 30 pins) to battle state placewinner Eric Burnett (28-1) at 215 pounds. Islip HS advanced three wrestlers into the state finals for the second consecutive year, last year the Bucs emerged with three champions. Freshman Marty Liquori (38-0) of Wantagh-8 advanced to the finals and will face a tough foe, Casey LaNave (36-2) of Chenango Forks-4 at 96 pounds, also advancing to the finals for Section Eight were Eduardo Delgado (40-1) at 140 and Joe Goetz (31-1) at 275 pounds.
