FOUR NEW YORKERS NAMED TO AWN ALL-FRESHMAN TEAM

      New York State claimed four
Amateur Wrestling News All-Freshman Team selections for the 2011 season. Leading the way for the Empire State was Stephen Dutton (23-14) of Lehigh University. Dutton (Rocky Point HS) was rated second at 141 pounds and at the NCAA Championships earned All-American Honorable Mention status (one match away from All-American). Syosset HS three-time state champion Nick Arujau (24-10) was ranked 4th at 125 pounds, he now competes for American University. Austin Meys (21-11) of Lehigh was tabbed as the #3 frosh at 174 pounds. Meys (Shenendehowa HS) was the OSW winner at the 2009 NYS meet. Pete Capone (20-17) a former state king from Johnson City, now at Ohio State, was ranked third at 197 pounds. The Rookie of the Year Award went to talented freshman David Taylor (38-1) of Penn State who was the NCAA runnerup at 157 pounds.

The All-Freshman team was started by AWN back in 1974. New York's Ed Banach (Port Jervis HS) was selected in 1980. Banach was an NCAA champion for Iowa University and an Olympic champion. Also in 1980, the AWN Rookie Coach of the Year was Carl Adams at Rhode Island University. Adams was a two-time NCAA titlist at Iowa State. Other former New York Rookie Coach of the Year recipients were Larry Sciaccehtano (1966) of NY Maritime, Rob Koll (1994) of Cornell, Jim Beichner (1996) of Buffalo and Brad Penrith (2001) of Northern Iowa.
