KELLENBERG WINS NSCHSAA CHAMPIONSHIP

Kellenberg won their first NSCHSAA team title with 396.5 points to finish ahead of defending champion Chaminade (347) and St. Anthony's (228). Fifth-year coach, Chris Alfalla, was thrilled with his team performance, as they crowned seven champions, including three repeat winners, Ryan Fallot (35-3) at 130, Andrew Baez (22-6) at 160 and Dan Conroy (26-3) at 215 pounds. Other titlists for the Firebirds were John Tanner at 96, Steven Contino (22-4) at 119,  Pat Fallot (27-7) and Brian Gilmartin at 189 pounds. Chaminade garnered two individual winners amongst their ten finalists. The Flyers champions were Anthony Piazza (30-4) who used his bar arm to record a first period fall for the 140-pound title and earned the Most Pins Award, he clamped three foes in 5:46, along with teammate, Carl Petrocelli (26-7) at 152 pounds. St. Anthony's emerged with five individual winners, including two-time NYS place-winner and three-time Catholic League champion, Stephen Russ (26-2), who flatenned his opponent in :52 seconds for the 112-pound crown. Also claiming titles for the Friars were Ricky Randazzo (24-6) at 103, Joe Calderone (28-6) who edged Chaminade's Rob Rooney, 5-3, at 125, sophomore Pat Fiorvanti  at 145 and Ed Cella (25-3) at 171 pounds. Fiorvanti (20-5) avenged his, 8-5 dual-meet loss last week, to reigning league titlist, Doug Witzenbocker (35-4, 101 career wins) in a hard fought match for the 145-pound title. Fiorvanti scored with a single leg to take a 3-1 edge, but Witzenbocker tied the bout with a switch midway through the third period. Fiorvanti then escaped and held off Witzenbocker in the waning seconds for an exciting 4-3 victory.  For the first time this season, Patrick Fiorvanti's father, Rudy, was in attendance. Rudy Fiorvanti, a champion wrestler from Massapequa HS, is battling leukemia and promised his son that if he made it to the finals he would be there. Patrick commented, " I saw my Dad in the stands and it really pumped me up, I really wanted to do it for him." After the match, his  Dad  told him, "I'm going to Farrell for the States." Also in attendance were other members of the Fiorvantis and watching the match unfold, especially with the outcome, was a heartfelt moment and a touching experience for the entire family.

Chaminade had won the past four league tournaments and has won 23 league titles. The Flyers will send 19 wrestlers to the CHSAA States. Kellenberg (12-5) won the both the league dual-meet title and the League Tournament in the same season for the first time. The CHSAA Tournament is scheduled at Monsignor Farrell HS (Staten Island) on Sunday and Monday, beginning at 10:00 AM.
