NEW YORKERS on the NCAA mats

     Sixteen former New York State prepped wrestlers, including a three-time NCAA champion and five All-Americans should make a huge impact on the upcoming collegiate season.

     Leading the way will be senior
Kyle Dake (35-0, 100-4 career record) of Cornell. Dake a three-time NCAA winner in three different weight classes will be at 157 pounds. Dake is looking to become the third wrestler to claim four NCAA crowns and could be the first wrestler to win four NCAA titles in a row without a redshirt year. The other four-time titlists were Pat Smith (Okla State) and Cael Sanderson (Iowa State).

     Returning All-Americans for the Empire State include
Steve Bonanno (32-9) of Hofstra ranked 4th at 125, Steven Keith (33-11) of Harvard at 133, Mike Nevinger (33-12) of Cornell at 141, both are rated 5th in their respective weight classes, 2012 bronze medalist Donnie Vinson (40-5) of Binghamton now ranked second at 149 and former teammate Nick Gwiazdowski (30-9) now at NCarolina State ranked 8th at 285 pounds.

     Other highly-touted and ranked collegians according to the
Amateur Wrestling News are Naryman (Nick) Arujau (13th at 133), now at Cornell, Stephen Dutton (14th at 141) formerly from Lehigh, now at Michigan, two 165-pounders, Joe Booth (13th) of Drexel and Matk Lewanowski (16th) of Buffalo, along with John-Martin Cannon (9th at 174) of Buffalo and Nate Schiedel (11th at 184) of Binghamton. Others in the mix should be Christian Boley (11th) of Maryland and Cody Reed (17th) of Binghamton, both are at 197, and a pair in the 285-pound class; Peter Capone (18th)of Ohio State and Ernest James (19th) of Edinboro.

Mat Notes...
The 47th annual NWCA All-Star Classic will be held on the campus at American University  (Washington, D.C.) in the Bender Arena on November 3rd at 7:30 PM. An intriguing match-up will pit NCAA champions, the aforementioned Kyle Dake vs David Taylor (70-1 career) of Penn State in the 165-pound class. Another highlight meet for the upcoming season will be the Grapple at the Garden (Madison Square Garden) on Sunday, December 16th beginning at 10:30 AM. The meet will feature some of the nation's top wrestling programs, including Oklahoma State (34 NCAA team titles), Iowa, Cornell, Nebraska and Ohio State. Hofstra is slated to wrestle Iowa in the morning session and the square off against coach Tommy Ryan's Buckeyes at 12:30 PM. The Pride also has two other NCAA ranked matmen Luke Vaith (12th at 141) and returning AA, Justin Accordino, now rated 6th at 149 pounds. The top NCAA teams appear to be defending two-time team champion Penn State, Iowa, Oklahoma State, Minnesota, Cornell, Ohio State, Illinois, Central Michigan, Missouri and Oklahoma...
