Connetquot HS won the 48th annual Massapequa Holiday Tournament as they tallied 263.5 points to outdistance Section Nine power Monroe-Woodbury (215) and Hauppauge (201.5). Rounding out the top teams were Section Five's  Pittsford (175), Long Beach (120.5) and Massapequa with 100 points.

     The T'Birds crowned four champions among their seven finalists and were paced by two-time all-county Steven Bulzomi (11-0) at 120, Gino Titone (132), Greg Chery (138) and league placer Brendan Dent at 145. Hauppauge's 2010 NYS champion Mark West recorded a second period pin en route to the 126-pound crown. Long Beach had two winners, county finalist Steven Sewkumar (113) and Zamar Allen at 195 pounds. State-ranked Chris Koo (18-0) of Great Neck South posted a 20-5 tech fall in the final and coasted to the 152-pound crown.The host Chiefs had a lone champion with Tim Gungor who clamped his opponent for a first period falll in the 285-pound class.

The Friends of Massapequa Wrestling, Inc. (mainly Vito Mundo, Steve Strumwasser and Dan Wetzel) a group dedicated to fostering the sport of wrestling has renamed the high school wrestling room after former legendary coach, educator and mentor Al Bevilacqua. Bevilacqua served as an educator in the Massapequa Public Schools from 1961 to 1994. Bevi was the head coach until 1977 when assistant and lifelong friend Gary Mims took over the program.The Al Bevilacqua Wrestling Room has the names of all county and state champions from both Berner HS and Massapequa HS, as well as Nassau County place-winners on the walls above the mats.
     The dedication ceremomy took place this past year. Al and  Cathy, are proud parents of six children; Chris (county champion and All-American at Penn State), Michael (NYS champion), Kevin (soccer standout) and three beautiful daughters, Barbara, Erin and Nora. Congratulations to the Bevilacqua Family for this outstanding achievement and distinguished honor.
