LONGWOOD TOPS SACHEM EAST 32-22
Longwood (16-0) currently ranked 7th in New York State defeated Sachem East (16-2), 32-22, in a battle of League I powers and two of the top mat squads in the Empire State. The Lions were paced by the Rasheed brothers, 8th-grader Corey (18-0), freshman Malik (18-1), and all-county matmen Casey Brice (125) and unbeaten Nick Hall at 135 pounds. Corey, a state finalist last year, had a key third period double leg takedown en route to a solid 6-2 decision at 103 and Malik used a pancake to flattened his opponent at the 5:08 mark of their 112-pound bout. Brice, a third-place finisher at the county meet, scored with a snap/spin takedown and converted an inside overhead cradle for a third period fall. In a pivotal bout of the dual, Hall used snap/spin takedowns to take a commanding 7-0 lead before securing a third period pin with a tight cradle and gave his team a 27-16 lead. Pat Jennings (19-1) scored with a barrage of single and double leg takedowns, along with a series of back points, en route to a 21-4 tech fall in the 152-pound class and clinched the victory for his team.
Sachem East started the dual with consecutive victories by the Merante brothers, Mike, an 8-5 winner at 160, and Frank (18-2 record) with a 10-2 major decision at 171. All-County senior Chris DiIorio (18-1) was bumped a weight class and scored with double leg/lift takedowns for a 9-4 win at 215 pounds and gave the host team a short-lived 10-3 lead. Other standouts for the Flaming Arrows were Tom Matthews (130), Billy Merone (140) and Mike Schruhl at 145. Matthews hit a granby roll reversal and stunned his oppponent with a third period fall and brought the team score to 21-16. In perhaps the most entertaining bout of the night, which involved some questionable and bizarre calls, Merone rallied with an escape and a late third period takedown to edge Dylan Sebolt, 11-10, while Schruhl outlasted his opponent with a 11-6 verdict.

Mat Notes...
Longwood won eight bouts contested in this classic dual and registered four pins and a technical fall. Two of the matches went into sudden death overtime with Longwood emerging with two decisions. Both coaches, Mike Picozzi (Longwood) and Sean O'Hara (Sachem East) were former New York State place-winners, Picozzi (formerly from Huntington) finished second in 1976 and O'Hara (a Sachem HS grad) placed third in 1992. Longwood assistant coach Nick Hall was a NYS champion in 1991. Look for these two elite teams to battle for the League I Tournament title..

Longwood's Pat Jennings used his bear hug to pick up a technical fall at 152 pounds and lead his team past Sachem East.
