| Islip upends MacArthur
The top-ranked teams on Long Island squared off in the inaugural LI Dual Meet Challenge at Nassau CC. The Islip Bucs defeated the MacArthur Generals, 28-21, in a match that featured some of the top grapplers in the state. Coach Howie Greenblatt's Generals were led by lightweights Matt Myers (103) and Nassau champ and state medalist Matt DeLorenzo (119), as Myers posted a first period fall and DeLorenzo scored an exciting 14-10 decision. Coach Joe Patrovich's Bucs battled back and scored consecutive victories as Dan Egan recorded a 4-3 decision at 125 and Chris Wade scored a come-from-behind win with a close 7-6 decision at 130. This set the stage for freshman Ryan Patrovich. Patrovich was pitted against highly regarded Dylan Reitmayr at 135 pounds. Patrovich had a 4-0 lead and came through as he scored a stunning second period fall to clinch the victory for his team.
In a feature match at 112 pounds state runnerup Islip sophomore Tom Magnani decisioned Nassau champ Bruce Popko, 16-5. All-county Dan Petroro tallied a solid 6-2 win at 140 pounds. MacArthur's other defending Nassau champions Adam Molano (160) and state title contender Gian Villante (215) were victorious as Molano posted a 4-1 decision and Villante recorded a first period fall. Both Molano and Villante are returning NYS place-winners.
Both of these programs are at their pinnacles, and have been successful throughout their history. They each have produced two state champions, Tom Longobardi (1993) and Mike Patrovich (2001) for Islip, and for MacArthur Craig O'Grady(1973) and James Strouse (2002). Their next tests will come in February, as Islip will battle Huntington in a dual meet showdown and MacArthur takes on all opponents in the Nassau Dual Meet Championships...
