The 21st annual Kris McDonald/Islip Cup Tournament featured nine of the top teams on Long Island as they battled in the one day tournament. Islip, currently the top-ranked team on Long Island and New York State, successfully defended their team title as they amassed 366 points to easily outdistance runner-up, Hills East, which finished with 262. Rounding out the top five teams were, Nassau power Plainedge (185), Deer Park (172.5) and West Islip who tallied 141 points.
The tournament is dedicated to the honor of former Islip HS wrestler, Kris J. McDonald, a 1992 graduate, who tragically lost his life on the night of January 29, 1994, when his vehicle crashed after sliding on a patch of "black-ice."  At the time of the accident, he was wrestling at SUNY Farmingdale, where he was studying for a career in nursing. A year after the accident, the Islip Cup wrestling tournament, which is run by the Islip Booster Club, was renamed the Kris J. McDonald Tournament. There are many fond memories of him present, as in the lobby the entire family volunteers at the event and through commerative T'shirts sales have instituted a wrestling scholarship in his name.  His former physical education teacher and Islip's current wrestling coach, Joe Patrovich, remembered Kris, "as a very likeable, hard-working kid with a great personality...It's nice to have his name on the tournament," he said. A former teammate of Kris, Lenny Bacon, commented on Kris, "he was a great teammate, we were best of friends and his always put his family and friends ahead of himself and everyone else." His loving Mom, remembers Kris in a very special way and said, "he was such a caring son and had a heart that you don't normally see in kids and he loved kids."  Mr. and Mrs. McDonald said the family feels honored to have their son's name on the tournament. McDonald's high school wrestling and soccer coach, Harry Carls, remembered Kris, "as being a county-caliber wrestler and an exceptional soccer player, he could kick a ball a mile." His memory is a good memory and it is only fitting that the Islip community honors a young man that was outstanding in so many ways.
Islip crowned six champions and were led by Tyler Mashkow(26-1) at 103, co-champions; unbeaten Tom Magnani(26-0) and Kris Camarda at 119, Paul Vaeth(130), Chris Wade(140), Mike Rudden who defeated tough Tom Fasano(22-3), of Deer Park, 3-0, for the 145-pound title and state finalist, junior  Ryan Patrovich(26-2) who scored a 14-2 decision over Ted Garelick(20-2) of Hills East at 152 pounds. Hills East, one of the top challengers for the Suffolk team title, finished with three individual winners; Anthony Barriero(22-2) at 96, Dylan Suchow(23-3) at 160 and returning county runner-up Mike Morales(17-1) at 189 pounds. Sachem North also added three titlists, unbeaten Rob Goldberg(23-0) at 112, county finalist Chris Iorio(23-1) who edged county place-winner Greg Schollmeyer(23-2), of Deer Park, 2-0, for the 125-pound crown and reigning Suffolk champion, Ken Kennedy(15-1) at 275 pounds. Another defending Suffolk champ and state finalist, John Barone(25-1), of William Floyd, prevailed as he registered a technical fall in 3:29 over Frank Cacioli(21-6) of Plainedge, for the 171-pound title. Other weight class champions included West Islip's Kyle Keane(20-2) who pinned Hills East's Luca Messina at the 4:50 mark for the 135-pound crown and was voted the tournament's outstanding wrestler, along with Plainedge's highly-touted Brian Fanning(24-2) who pinned his teammate John Gaglione(18-6) to capture the 215-pound championship.  Sachem North's, Chris Iorio was voted Champion of Champions and Islip's, Tyler Mashkow earned the Most Pins Award.
