| HOFSTRA TOPPLES WISCONSIN By Jim & Tony Nordland Hofstra (1-0) upended Big ten power Wisconsin (5-1), 25-12, before 1,056 fans at the David S.Mack Sports Complex. The Pride won seven of the ten bouts contested in the dual and were led by returning All-American Paul Gillespie at 165 pounds. The dual started at 125 where Steve Bonanno (3-1) scored with a barrage of single leg takedowns and tight waist/arm bar tilts and rolled to an 18-2 tech fall. Hofstra won the next two bouts, as Jamie Franco (133) rallied with a third period high crotch takedown to knot his bout at 3-3. In the overtime stanza Franco escaped for an exciting 4-3 decision over Tom Kelliher. Luke Vaith used his leg ride and tilts and coasted to a 16-0 tech fall at 141 pounds to give the host team a comfortable 13-0 lead. The Badgers got on the scoreboard with a 7-2 victory by Cole Scmidt at 149, but the Pride responded with Tyler Banks (157) with a key third period reversal and emerged with a solid 3-0 decsion. In the marquee match of the dual with featured two unbeatens and both nationally ranked wrestlers, the Pride's Paul Gillespie (6-0), currently ranked fifth in the nation, scored with a single leg takedown and added a second period escape to edge Ben Jordan (5-1), 3-0, in the 165-pound bout. Hofstra's Jermaine John was leading 3-0 in his match and caught in a tight overhead cradle by Frank Cousins for a stunning fall at the 5:53 mark at 174 pounds, his win brought the team score to 19-9. The Pride won two of thethree final bouts as Ben Clymer (4-1) blanked Tim McCall, 2-0, at 184 and junior Paul Snyder (6-1) scored with a second period switch and later used a slick shrug takedown for a 5-2 victory at 285 pounds. Mat Notes... Congratulations to first year head coach Rob Anspach on his opening dual meet victory. Next up for the Pride is the Cliff Keen-Las Vegas Invitational on December 2nd-3rd.
