(7-0) currently ranked fifth in the nation defeated eighth-ranked Penn State (4-1), 24-10, before 1,623 fans at the David S. Mack Sports Complex, in a meet that featured two of the nation's top dual meet teams. The Pride were led by unbeaten Mike Patrovich (7-0) at 165 and Chris Weidman (13-1) at 197 pounds. Both are seniors and returning All-Americans, Patrovich is currently ranked third and Weidman sixth in their respective weight classes. Patrovich used a series of double leg takedowns and tilts for a tech fall, 18-2 and Weidman upset NCAA runner-up Phil Davis, as he scored with a late reversal for an exciting 5-4 victory and gave the Pride a comfortable 17-0 lead with five bouts remaining. The dual meet started in electrifying fashion at 157 pounds and saw Penn State senior Nathan Galloway (15-5) throw James Strouse (17-2) to his back and nearly pinned him with a front headlock/cement mixer, but Strouse battled back for a solid 10-6 decision. At 174 pounds, sophomore Alton Lucas (11-2) scored on a third period double leg takedown to edge returning All-American, previously unbeaten James Yonushonis (10-1), with a 3-2 verdict. Hofstra's Joe Rovelli (15-3), a junior, trailed Philip Bomberger, 4-0, but rallied with his granby rolls and tight waist tilts for a 13-6 verdict at 184 pounds. The Nittany Lions won three of the next five bouts, including a close decision at 125 pounds. In that bout PSU's undefeated Mark McKnight (10-0), edged Dave Tomasette, 5-2, to bring the team score to 17-7. The Pride responded with key wins by junior Charles Griffin (12-3) at 141 and red-shirt freshman Mitch Smith (6-1) at 149 pounds.
