| Fifth-ranked Michigan (3-1) defeated Hofstra (2-2-1), 25 -13, before 1,410 fans at the Hofstra Arena. The Wolverines won the first three bouts to open up a 12-0 lead, including a hard fought, 4-2, victory by Josh Churella over Hofstra's Charles Griffin at 141 pounds. The marquee match of the dual was at 149, where two-time All-American Jon Masa (14-4) squared off with fourth-ranked Eric Tannenbaum (9-3). Tannenbaum attempted a strong double leg takedown, but Masa countered with a picture-perfect pancake for a stunning 5-0 lead after the first period. Masa then scored with an arm through takedown and fireman's and coasted to an impressive 13-4 major decision. Masa's win put the Pride on the board and brought the team score to 12-4. James Strouse (15-5) posted a solid 7-1 decision at 157, but the Wolverines responded with top-ranked and unbeaten Ryan Churella, who recorded an 11-3 major decision at 165 pounds. Hofstra's Mike Patrovich (14-1), currently ranked fourth in his weight class, scored with his patented single takedowns and emerged with a solid 11-6 decision, over seventh-ranked Nick Roy, at 174, to bring the Pride within 16-10 in the team score. Michigan won two of the three remaining bouts for a 25-13 dual meet victory. MAT NOTES... Hofstra coach Tom Ryan, now in his 11th season, has a 100-75-1 dual meet record and the Pride has won five consecutive conference championships. Jon Masa (Long Beach ) has a chance to become Hofstra's first three-time All American, he has finished seventh and third in the past two NCAA Championships. Former NYS champions, James Strouse (MacArthur) and Mike Patrovich (Islip), were recipients of the Ray Downey Sr. Memorial Scholarships, an award given in honor of FDNY Chief Downey, whose was killed in the Sept. 11th attacks.
