CENTRAL MICHIGAN TOPS HOFSTRA, 22-14
    Central Michigan (6-0) defeated Hofstra (4-4), 22-14, before 1,212 fans at the David S. Mack Sports Complex in Hempstead, NY. The Pride opened the meet with a strong performance by Dave Tomasette (16-5) who scored with a single leg scramble takedown and added a series of tilts to post an 11-1 major decision at 125 pounds. Sophomore standout Lou Ruggirello (18-4) dominated his bout and used his bar arm near falls to record a 12-0  major decision at 133 pounds and gave the host team an 8-0 team lead. Senior All-American Charles Grifffin (16-3) used a strong double leg takedown in the opening period and added a third period snap/spin for a 6-3 verdict at 141 pounds, and gave Hofstra a comfortable 11-0 lead, going into the middleweigt matches.The Chippewas responded by taking two of the next three bouts to bring the team score to 14-6. At 157 pounds, sophomore Jonny Bonilla-Bowman (7-6) rallied with a barrage of slick ankle pick takedowns in the third period to post an exciting 10-7 decision. In the marquee match of the dual, Hofstra's Alton Lucas (11-1), ranked 6th in the nation, squared off with Central Michigan's Brandott Sinnott (16-1), ranked 3rd, at 174 pounds. Both wrestlers managed escapes throughout regulation and Sinnott scored with a high crotch takedown with two seconds remaining in the overtme stanza and emerged with a close 3-1 ot decision, handing Lucas his first loss on the season. The Chippewas showed their strength, in the upperweights, as Christian Sinnott (14-1) at 184, third-ranked Wynn Michalak (17-1) at 197, and Bubba Gritter (13-2) who posted the only fall in the meet, led their squad to the
victory.
Mat Notes...
   Hofstra University announced the recipients of Chief Ray Downey Sr. Memorial Scholarship  at the onset of the dual; seniors Dave Tomasette and Charles Griffin. The grants are named in the memory of the late FDNY hero who was killed in the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Charles Griffin (3rd in the NCAA), now has 104 career victories and was one of the three All-Americans featured in the dual between two of the top 20 teams in the nation, the others were Central Michigan's Brandon Sinnott (7th )and Bubba Gritter (5th). Hofstra senior Tom Daddino, a former NYS champion from Carey HS made his wrestling debut today at 285 pounds.

    The Hofstra Pride showed some resilience in coming back after a tough morning loss to defeat #14 ranked Edinboro, 24-19. Hofstra head coach, Tom Shifflet, defeated his old alma mater where he was a three-time NCAA All-American. The Pride was on the board first with a win from tenth ranked Dave Tomasette at 125 pounds, followed by a dominate pin from sixth ranked Lou Ruggirello at 133 pounds. Charles Griffin kept it going with a technical fall at 141 and Mitch Smith made it four straight with an exciting overtime victory at 149 to make the score 17-0. Edinboro was able to close the gap when defending NCAA champion, Gregor Gillespie (22-2) scored a technical fall at 157 pounds and Jarrod King pinned Hofstra freshman Justin Danz in the first period. The Pride would clinch the meet by winning the next two bouts, with Alton Lucas and Joe Rovelli. Lucas use his patented duck- under and quickness to pick up a 5-3 victory at 174 and Rovelli scored a major 11-0 decision at 197. Edinboro closed out the match winning at heavyweight.
