| HOFSTRA & BUFFALO BATTLE TO A DRAW
By Jim & Tony Nordland
Hofstra (0-0-1), ranked 25th in the nation, battled the University of Buffalo (1-0-1), to 16-16 deadlock, as both squads won five matches before 1,024 fans at the David S. Mack Sports Complex. The dual started at 149 pounds, where the Bulls' 12th-ranked Desi Green edged Pride sophomore Justin Accordino, 3-2. Hofstra then reeled off four consecutive victories, senior Jonny-Bonilla Bowman (157), sophomore P.J. Gillespie (165), junior Ryan Patrovich (174) and Ben Clymer, a sophomore at 184, to give the host team a comfortable 13-3 lead.
Bowman (44-22 career) used his single leg takedown to open the scoring and added a second period high crotch takedown on the buzzer and coasted to 10-5 decision. Gillepsie (22-15 career) converted an underhook/pancake for a key second period takedown and added riding time for a 5-2 verdict. Patrovich (42-24 career) was relentless with his single leg takedowns, and led 7-1 midway through the bout and later scored with a nice snap/spin takedown for a solid 10-3 decision. Clymer (22-12 career) dominated his opponent and scored with a double leg takedown and later used his tight claw ride for a near fall , along with over two minutes of riding time to post an 8-0 major decision.
Buffalo would win four of the five remaining bouts in the dual, as the Bulls won three consecutive decisions, to narrow the team score to 13-9. At 125 pounds, true freshman Jamie Franco edged Dyaln Dabolt, 1-0, with a third period shoulder roll escape and gave the Pride a 16-9 lead. Buffalo's Kevin Smith turned in an impressive 27-12 technical fall with a barrage of takedowns at 133, to bring the team score to 16-13. In the crucial bout of the dual, Pride redshirt freshman Tyler Banks was leading Andrew Schutt, 4-0, with 16 seconds remaining in the bout. Schutt reversed Rotella and scored a three-point near fall to eke out a 5-4 come-from-behind victory and stunned the partisan crowd.
Hofstra now embarks in its 62nd season of intercollegiate wrestling competition. The Pride has wrestled Buffalo eight times and now the leads the series 4-3-1. Hofstra won last season, 24-10. Three of the Pride's wrestlers in the lineup today were NCAA qualifiers and are currently ranked by Amateur Wrestling News. Jonny-Bonilla Bowman (7th at 157), P.J.Gillespie (20th at 165) and Ryan Patrovich (11th at 174), are all capable of high NCAA finishes this season. Both Gillespie and Patrovich have moved up to different weight classes and looked strong in their initial bouts. Hofstra head coach Tom Shifflet (Sweet Home HS) is now in his fourth season at the helm and Buffalo's mentor Jim Beichner (Cassadaga Valley) enters his 15th campaign. Next up for Hofstra are the Northeast Duals (Albany) on December 4th-5th...
