National powers Iowa (9-0) and Oklahoma State (6-0) showed their dominance at the inaugural Grapple at the Garden wrestling event sponsored by the Beat the Streets. Over 9,000 fans were treated to a wrestling spectacle that also featured top teams, Missouri, Cornell, Nebraska and Maryland.

Iowa was paced by two-time NCAA champion Matt McDonough (9-0) at 125 and a trio of unbeatens Tony Ramos (133), top-ranked Derek St. John (9-0) at 157 and Bobby Telford at 285 pounds. McDonough posted a major decision over Hofstra All-American Steve Bonanno, 10-2, as he was relentless with his single leg takedowns and escapes. The Hawkeyes blanked Hofstra (42-0) and upended Bucknell (34-9) in their dual meets.

Oklahoma State defeated UTenn-Chattanooga (41-9) and the Big Red of Cornell (21-16). The Cowboys were led by 2011 NCAA champion Jordan Oliver (10-0) at 149, AA Tyler Caldwell (165) and unbeaten Chris Perry at 174 pounds. Oliver (from Easton, PA) used a barrage of high crotch and duck-under takedowns en route to his two victories.

Cornell was led by three-time NCAA champion Kyle Dake (12-0, 112-4 career mark) at 165, AA Mike Nevinger (17-5) at 141 and NCAA titlist Steve Bosak who finally returned to action in the 184-pound class. Other standouts for the Big Red include true freshman Nahshon Garrett (18-2) at 125 and Syosset's Nick Arujau (6-2) at 133.

Ohio State (6-0) has the Steiber brothers: defending NCAA champion Logan (14-0) at 133 and Hunter (16-0), an All-American at 141. Other top Buckeyes are New York natives, Ian Paddock (149) and Peter Capone (11-4) at 285 pounds. The Buckeyes posted two dual victories; Hofstra (38-3) and Maryland (34-3).

Maryland head coach Kerry McCoy (Longwood HS is a former NYS champion and an NCAA champion at Penn State. The Buckeyes head coach is Wantagh's Tommy Ryan who was the Pride's coach from 1995 to 2006.
