John Glenn (15-0) defeated Rocky Point (17-2) in an exciting League VI dual meet before a capacity crowd at John Glenn HS. The Knights are the top ranked mat squad in the Empire State and boast a solid lineup.
The dual started at 189 and John Glenn's all-county performer Joe Giaramita posted a solid 9-4 decision to give the home team a 3-0 lead. Rocky Point won the next two bouts, Miles Farrell (215) and 7th-grader Tommy Dutton  scored on a snap/spin takedwon in overtime to edged Ken Massa, 4-2, at 103. John Glenn would respond and take the next two bouts, as Vin Punzone used a control bar arm for a 12-1 major decision at 112 and James DeKrone (119) had a 4-0 win to give the Knights a 10-7 lead.
Rocky Point state medalist Matt Ross scored with a sweep single en route to a 9-0 shutout at 125. John Glenn would reeled off three consecutive victories, paced by defending county champion unbeaten Nick Meinsen (20-0) who recorded a 15-0 tech fall at 130, followed by a dramatic fall by Matt Gannon who flattened his opponent with an inside overhead cradle at the 2:31 mark at 135 pounds. Junior Ken Meinsen responded with a 11-4 win at 140 and gave the Knights a comfortable 24-11 margin.
Reigning state champion undefeated Stephen Dutton (32-0, 208-11 career) scored with a low single and added a snap/spin takedown for a hard-fought 7-3 victory over talented Matt Fusaro at 145 and brought the team score to 24-14. John Glenn's state finalist Nick Terdick (19-0, 121-11) was relentless with his bar arm and secured the fall midway through the second period in the 152-pound bout. The  marquee match of the dual pitted previously unbeaten Anthony Volpe (27-1, 202-19) a returning state bronze medalist against highly-touted and undefeated Mike Bosco (20-0) at 160. Both traded escapes and had near takedowns in regulation. In the overtime stanza, Bosco escaped in the third period and held Volpe off at the buzzer for a crowd-pleasing 2-1 victory. At 171 pounds, state placer Billy Coggins (30-1) used his high crotch takedown and added a key second period reversal for a 6-3 decision over Jarid Cheatham.

Mat Notes...
John Glenn now has a 47- match win streak and appears primed to defend their league and county titles. John Glenn won eight bouts in tonight's dual meet, which featured ten ranked wrestlers on Long Island  between these two elite teams. Meinsen, Terdick and Bosco all are currently ranked amongst the best in NYS. Possible league, county and state rematch could see Bosco and Volpe meet again in the 160-pound finals. Rocky Point is currently ranked 8th in New York State and has three potential state champions with Dutton, Volpe and Coggins. Coggins earned his 200th career victory and now has an impressive 200-24 career mark. The dual meet had a plethora of top caliber grapplers and was evidenced by the hotly-contested bouts in most of the weight classes. As one veteran wrestling fan noted, "This meet could have as many as eight All-State wrestlers and more than a few state champions." The Eagles recently finished as team runners-up at the prestigious Eastern States Classic Tournament behind team champion Hauppauge HS. Their dual losses have come at the hands of Wantagh HS (Nassau County Champion) and tonight vs John Glenn.
