    Longwood HS, currently the top-ranked team in the state according to The Mat Slap won the 9th annual Eastern States Classic over 89 teams at Sullivan County Community College. The Lions tallied 178.5 points and finished ahead of  Section Two power Shenendehowa (142.5), Fox Lane (127), Long Beach (119.5) and Hauppauge with 115 points. Other top LI teams were John Glenn, 8th place with 89.5 and MacArthur, in 13th place with 65.5 points.

     The Lions were paced by All-State freshman Corey Rasheed (24-1) who dropped a close 6-4 decision to two-time state titlist Arik Robinson (Peru) in the finals of the loaded 112-pound class. Finishing in third place for Longwood were Nick Hall (145), Ricky Renck (152) and Pat Jennings at 160. Other place-winners were Anthony Donofrio (6th at 96), Casey Brice (4th at 125), Malik Rasheed (who defaulted to 8th place at 130) and Dylan Sebolt (7th at 171 pounds.

      Long Beach's state medalist and top seeded Dylan Palacio (25-0) edged Wayne's Tory Cain, 2-1, for the 145-pound crown. Teammates Steven Sewkumar (96) and state placer Mark Ragunandan (103) finished as runners-up. Sewkumar was defeated by Dylan Realbuto (Somers), 9-6, and Ragunandan was edged by Eastport South Manor's Travis Passaro, 3-2.

     Other Long Island champions were Islip's Kyle Wade (26-0) at 152 and John Glenn's Joe Giaramita (25-1) at 189 pounds. Former state champion Brian Realbuto (Somers), a 2009 winner defeated reigning champion Quinton Murphy (Holley), 17-12, in a wild final at 135 pounds. Defending state champions, the Scott twin brothers of Palmyra-Macedon both prevailed in their respecive weight classes. Owen (160) and Craig (171) both remained unbeaten, have identical 26-0 records and will take their mat skills to Cornell University next season. Another returning champions Derak Heyman (Tioga) at 140 and Nick Gwiazdowski (24-0) of Duanesburg won titles, Gwiazdowski  posted the only fall in the finals to claim the 215 pound crown.

Mat Notes...
    State champions; Mark West (112) of Hauppauge and the Dierna brothers, Al (119) and Bob (130) of Wayne, had to settle as place-winners in their weight classes.
