  Cornell University, currently ranked 16th in the nation, upset fifth-ranked Hofstra (17-3-2), 22-18, before 800 spectators at the New York Athletic Club, in Manhattan, NY. Sonny Greenhalgh, event coordinator and NYAC supervisor, commented, "Everyone here knows the sport and only the real die hard fans come to a wrestling match at the NYAC." The fans were treated to some excellent wrestling, as many of the bouts were hard fought, with two evenly matched teams.The dual started at 174 pounds, where Hofstra sophomore Alton Lucas (19-8) scored with a quick single leg takedown and held on for a 3-2 victory. The Big Red won the next five bouts, including wins by fourth-ranked, Jerry Rinaldi (14-2), who defeated Chris Weidman (23-5), 4-2, at 197 and third-ranked, Adam Frey (11-0) who edged freshman Lou Ruggirello (26-7), 7-5, at 133 pounds. In that hotly contested bout, Frey opened the scoring with a double leg takedown and a snap back for a 5-0 lead. Ruggirello battled back and scored with a single leg to knot the score at 5. Frey then hit a shoulder roll reversal for the decisive two points and a 7-5 verdict. Also in the five match win streak was a forfeit win to sophomore and second-ranked Troy Nickerson at 125 pounds. Hofstra junior, Charles Griffin (24-4), currently ranked seventh, scored a fall at 141 pounds to bring the team score to 22-9. In the pivotal match of the dual, Cornell's Jordan Leen (25-4) edged Mitch Smith (12-4), 5-3, as Smith nearly scored with a double leg in the waning seconds of their 149-pound bout. The Pride responded with two victories, as second-ranked James Strouse (32-2) posted a solid 8-3 decision at 157 and Mike Patrovich (12-4) was embroiled in a wild match with Steve Anceravage. Patrovich applied a strong bear hug and secured the fall at the 4:08 mark at 165 pounds to make the final margin, 22-18, in favor of the Big Red.

   The Pride saw their seven match winning streak come to an end today, last year Hofstra lost to Cornell, 24-13. The Big Red first met Hofstra during the 1985-86 season, and Cornell leads the all-time series, 9-4. In the 2006 dual ,Troy Nickerson received a forfeit win and Jerry Rinaldi edged Chris Weidman, 4-3. Both are returning All-Americans, Nickerson (43-3 career mark) was NCAA runner-up and Rinaldi (107-28) finished in fourth place. The Pride is undefeated in 53 consecutive dual conference matches posting a 52-0-1 mark during that time. In today's dual, there were five former NYS champions, Troy Nickerson (Chenango Forks), five titles; Lou Ruggirello (Valley Central), three titles; James Strouse (MacArthur), Mike Patrovich (Islip) and Alton Lucas (West Babylon) with two state crowns. Hofstra will honor its graduating wrestlers at their final home match of the season against Rider on February 13th, at 7 pm, at the David Mack Sports Complex.The Pride will graduate six seniors; John Manarte (141), Mike Parziale (149), James Strouse (157), Mike Patrovich (165), Chris Weidman (197) and Matt Pollack at 185 pounds.
