CORNELL UPSETS HOFSTRA
2/5/2005
Hempstead, NY- Hofstra came into this afternoon's match ranked 11th with a two-match win streak hoping to make it three. Cornell, ranked 17th, had lost twice to Hofstra last season, but was also riding a two match win streak. Cornell walked away with a 20-12 upset victory in a bout that featured seven New York prepped wrestlers.
Cornell heavyweight, Matt Bogumil (Maine-Endwell HS) outlasted Hofstra's Gian Villante (MacArthur HS) in a 5-2 battle. Cornell had a couple of other upstate wrestlers who won, Mike Mormile (Monroe-Woodbury HS) and Joe Mazzurco (Mahopac HS). Other Long Islanders included; James Strouse (MacArthur HS) is now 16-8 and Mike Patrovich (Islip HS) who is just back in the lineup. Both Strouse and Patrovich won their bouts today but Long Beach's Jon Masa lost to top ranked Dustin Manotti.
There was a nice size crowd, despite the fact that the Nassau County Dual Meet Championships were going on down the road. The Downey Family and Hofstra also recognized and awarded some of its wrestlers for the Ray Downey Memorial Scholarships. The Big Red of Cornell improves to 7-4 while the Hofstra Pride slips to 9-4.  Defending NCAA Champion Oklahoma State is next weekend.
