Chaminade won eight of the fifteen bouts contested and defeated rival, St. Anthony's, 44-35, to claim the CHSAA dual-meet title. The meet started at 189 pounds as Chaminade's Brendan Gibson won by fall to give the Flyers a short-lived 6-0 lead. The Friars won the next four bouts to opened a 24-6 margin. The Flyers showed their resolve and responded by winning seven matches, including a first period pin by senior Pat Doherty (30-0, 109-21 career mark) in the 152-pound bout to clinch the dual meet victory. Chaminade was also led by Anthony Famularo (16-3) at 125, Dan Oates (22-2) at 135, sophomore Carl Petrocelli (16-7) at 140 and junior Doug Witzenbocker who posted a major decision at 145 pounds. Chaminade coach George Dlugolonski, now in his 33rd season, will now get the Flyers ready to defend their CHSAA Tournament title. St. Anthony's was led by returning NYS placewinner Stephen Russ (24-1) at 103, along with Joe Calderone (18-4) at 119, Ed Cella (21-4) at 171 and reigning CHSAA champion, Nick Bujacich (24-3) at 215 pounds. Other standouts for the Friars are Rich Randazzo (96) and tough John-Kevin Dolce at 275 pounds... |
