Brentwood (17-4) defeated Chaminade (15-3), 42-20, in a meet featuring two of the top mat squads on Long Island, at the Athletic Activity Center in Mineola. The Indians won eight bouts and were led by Suffolk champion, Josue Mendez (29-0, 105 career wins) at 171, Humberto Garcia (112) and Travis Calderon (22-2) at 130 pounds. Mendez pancaked his opponent and flattened him in 3:13, Garcia applied a tight cross face cradle and registered a first period pin and Calderon used a barrage of takedowns and bar arm tilts to post a 17-4 major decision. The Flyers were paced by junior Troy Sampson (23-3, 101-16) with a solid 10-1 major decision at 125, Alex Erickson (14-2) who used a tight inside overhead cradle for a fall at 189, and junior Brendan Fowler (23-3) who had a 10-4 verdict at 215, to bring the team score to 23-16. Brentwood then responded with three consecutive victories, including an exciting 9-6 win by Nelson Garcia at 119, to boost the team score to an insurmountable 38-16 margin, with only two bouts remaining in the dual.

The 96-pound bout did not count in the overall team score and saw Brentwood's Brendan Papa secure a second period fall. The Indians were without all-county sophomore Alex Gomez (23-1, 100 career victories) at 119 pounds. Coach Ralph Napolitano will be focusing on preparing his team for the gruelling League I Tournament,which will be held at William Floyd HS. Chaminade coach George Dlugolonski, now in his 37th year, will have the Flyers ready to defend their title in the upcoming NSCHSA and CHSAA Championships...
