| 2009 CAA CHAMPIONSHIPS By Jim & Tony Nordland www.thematslap.com Hofstra won their 8th consecutive Colonial Athletic Association team title as they tallied 106.5 points to edge runner-up Old Dominion (86.5) and Rider with 57.5 points, at Oscar Smith HS in Chesapeake, Virginia. The Pride crowned three champions, Lou Ruggirello (28-2) at 133, PJ Gillespie (19-13), at 149, and tough Jonny Bonilla-Bowman (21-7) at 157 pounds. Returning All-American Alton Lucas (24-6) was upset in the 174-pound finals, by Bagna Tovuujau (George Mason), with a 3-1 overtime decision. Other Pride finalists were Steve Bonanno (28-14) at 125, Justin Accordino (22-11) at 141 and sophomore Ryan Patrovich (20-7) at 165 pounds. Returning All-American James Nicholson (125) of Old Dominion and defending CAA champion Josh Patterson (41-4) of Binghamton at 184 pounds, had impressive tournaments, and should receive favorable seeding consideration for the upcoming NCAA Championships.
